EHNC September Meeting Recap
Agency Helps Homeless, LAPD Officers Offer Crime Tips
Did you miss our last meeting? Here's a recap of what went on!
The September 15 meeting of the East Hollywood Neighborhood Council featured Rudy Salinas from People Assisting The Homeless (PATH), an organization that works in the community to help get homeless people off the streets and give them needed services. He also shared real-life examples of how his organization's outreach teams have gotten people off the streets. For more information, call 323.960.3333 or visit their website.
LAPD Senior Lead Offier Matt Zeigler from the newly-relaocated Rampart Station also mentioned that though crime is down overall, there has been home and car burglaries in his patrol area, which is south of Santa Monica Blvd and east of Normandie Ave. He also mentioned a ride in graffiti along Virgil Avenue. Officer Zeigler can be contacted at 213.793.0771.
LAPD SLO Gina Chovan from the Northeast Division (north of Santa Monica Blvd and east of Normandie Ave) also reported on a rash of car break-ins by meth-addicted teens to fuel their addiction. She also recommended visiting the LAPD Crime Maps website for more information on recent reported crimes. If you are in the Northeast Divsision area, please contact SLO Lenny Davis at 213.793.0762.
Later, during the EHNC Governing Board meeting, they voted to sponsor its Parking Day LA installation, the September 20 alley beautification event and an outreach project with the Little Armenia Chamber of Commerce. The EHNC also voted to endorsed the Little Armenia Business Improvement District and an effort to eventually rename the Santa Western U.S. Post Office on Western Avenue after a prominent Armenian American.

Meet 'Joe The Tenant Representative'
Newest EHNC Governing Board Member Stands For Area Renters
By now, you've already heard of Joe The Plumber, Joe Six-Pack and Joe the Vice Presidential Candidate. Well, the EHNC has it's very own Joe -- Joe The Tenant Representative.
Joe Gietl was appointed by the EHNC Governing Board at its September meeting to fill in the long-vacant seat which represents renters across our community - a segment that comprises 88% of East Hollywood's population. Joe works as a paralegal at a nonprofit agency in Boyle Heights that provides legal services to low-income residents. Originally hailing from Wisconsin, he has been living in the Dayton Heights area of East Hollywood for over one year and can also speak Spanish. Most of all, he is very well-versed in tenant's-rights issues and has been a participant at EHNC meetings for several months.
If you rent an apartment or a house in East Hollywood and would like to bring any important tenant-related issues to the attention of the neighborhood council, please contact Joe at joe@easthollywood.net.

EHNC Celebrates Park[ing] Day
Temporary Park Calls Attention For Need Of More Open Space, Recreation
A new park opened (and closed) in our community on September 19 as the EHNC participated in its second annual Park[ing] Day L.A. activity.
The "East Hollywood Recreation Center," organized by the EHNC and the L.A. Neighborhood Land Trust, was open for about nine hours on Heliotrope Drive at Melrose, in the "Hel-Mel Bicycle District." area of East Hollywood. Taking four diagonal parking spaces, the park featured a 12-foot diameter swimming pool a barbecue grill, a swing, a shaded canopy and was decorated by flowering plants (used the next day for the alley beautification event). LACC students and staff, neighbors and passers-by hung out in the park, enjoyed the free food or waded in the pool on the late Summer's day. EHNC vice president Alfredo A. Hernandez planned the park, with help from the EHNC's Israel Stepanian, Elson Trinidad, Jorge Luis Rodriguez, Jennifer Moran and David Bell.
The temporary park on Heliotrope joined several other parks around the city, organized by individuals, architects, environmental groups and other organizations as a way to call to the need for more parks and open space in our cities, where more space is dedicated to automobiles rather than for actual people.
The EHNC is the first neighborhood council in the City of Los Angeles to endorse and participate in Park[ing] Day L.A., with two park installations in 2007. |
A Little Cleaner, A Little Greener
September Tree Care, Alley Beautification Events Green The Community
Two September beautification events made our community a little more greener and a little more cleaner.
A tree care event on September 13, organized in conjunction with TreePeople, added much-needed water, nutrients and mulch to the street trees along Virgil Avenue between Santa Monica and Sunset boulevards, which were planted in early 2007. The event was even covered in an article by the Los Angeles Independent newspaper.
A week later, on September 20, the T- shaped alley between Kenmore Avenue and Edgemont Street, north of Fountain Avenue, was cleaned of trash by local residents, members of nearby Hope International Bible Church and the EHNC's Gary Slossberg and Elson Trinidad. Afterward, flowering vines were planted along the walls, designed to beautify the alley and discourage graffiti.
Both beautification events were organized by East Hollywood resident Cassandra Pruett, who also organized the Edgemont Street tree planting in March. The EHNC also sponsored both events, using its funds to purchase flowers, materials and food for the volunteers.

Around The Neighborhood
Headlines From Across East Hollywood
LACC: The brand new Martin Luther King Jr. Library on the campus of Los Angeles City College
was officially dedicated on October 7. The three-story,
energy-efficient building on the far north end of the campus opened in
late August, just prior to the start of the Fall semester. During the
October 7 dedication, LACC President Dr Jamillah Moore was also formally
inaugurated, being the first president of African American descent in
the L.A. Community College system. The event was also attended by local
dignitaries, KCAL 9 news anchor Pat Harvey and EHNC Governing Board
members Israel Stepanian and Jorge Luis Rodriguez.
Hollywood: The new Helen Bernstein High School was dedicated on October 6 with a ceremony attended by Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, Council President Eric Garcetti, Assemblyman Kevin DeLeon, LAUSD Superintendent David Brewer and former mayor Richard Riordan. The school, named after the late teacher's union president and John Marshall High School teacher and counselor, has a capacity for about 1,800 students in grades 9-12.
Although the school is located a few blocks outside of East Hollywood's community boundaries, many of its students live in East Hollywood, where its pupil boundary goes as far east as Vermont Avenue.
Thai Town: Dignitaries and community members attended the unveiling of Thai Town's Preserve America sign, which was dedicated during Thai Cultural Day at Barnsdall Park's Gallery Theatre on September 21. Two of the signs will be installed along Hollywood Boulevard, at Western and Normandie avenues, by early 2009. Thai Town won the federally-sponsored designation in July and joins other culturally- and historically-significant communities across the United States.
Hel-Mel: The popular Orange 20 Bikes bicycle shop moved to its newer, larger digs at 4351 Melrose Avenue during the end of September, taking the storefront formerly occupied by Han's Furniture. The store plans an official grand opening celebration on Halloween, October 31.
