Thai Town Receives 'Preserve America' Designation
First Lady Laura Bush, Honorary Chair of the Preserve America initiative, designated
East Hollywood's very own Thai Town neighborhood as one of the nation’s newest Preserve
America Communities.
Preserve America-designated communities are areas across the United States that uniquely display the various facets of our nation's history and cultural heritage and are entitled to community improvement grants from the Federal government. As a result of a nationwide competitive application process submitted by the Thai Community
Development Center (Thai CDC), Chancee Martorell, Thai CDC Executive Director , recently recieved notice of the designation and will receive a certificate of designation signed by Mrs. Bush announcing that Thai Town is now a Preserve America Community.
Thai Town, designated by the City of Los Angeles in 1998, is a half-mile stretch of Hollywood Boulevard from Western Ave. to Normandie Ave. as a traditional point-of-entry for Thai immigrants and the site of several historic Los Angeles buildings, such as the Don Carlos Apartments, Trianon Apartments and the Mayer Building on Hollywood and Western.
Thai Town’s Preserve America application highlighted the public-private partnership involved in erecting the Apsonsi statues for the Thai Town Gateway Project, the annual Thai New Year’s Day Songkran Festival, Thai Culture Day, and LA Commons’ project featuring Thai Town as one of the most interesting cultural destinations in their “Trekking Los Angeles: Local Adventures in a Global City” guidebook.
The East Hollywood Neighborhood Council voted unanimously to endorse Thai Town's Preserve America application at its May meeting, and its resolution, along with that of the Los Angeles City Council's and Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa's support, was submitted in the application package to Washington D.C.
